Such impressive freshness to the aromas of pure mulberries, blackcurrants, blueberries, redcurrants and a swathe of roasting herbs, such as bay leaf and sage. Iodine and nori, too. The French oak is nicely subsumed already and there’s fruit purity that really sings here. The palate has a wealth of rich and ripe blue and black-fruit flavors with plenty of extract and depth on offer. This is an impressively bold, smoothly honed and focused cabernet. Fine, polished tannins frame the long finish. Drink over the next decade and more.
Dark ruby with purple reflections and broad ochre rim brightening. Complex aromas of red cherry, hints of mint and a touch of eucalyptus with dark nougat. Juicy, ripe cherries on the palate and fresh acidity, silky yet high tannins and a mineral-salty texture, with a long lasting finish. An excellent food companion. Definite ageing potential. Drink 2030-2050.
Soft wood touches on the nose alongside herbal sage, raspberries, nutmeg and cinnamon. Juicy and taught, this has tension and purity, a drive from start to finish. It feels quite strict and linear at the moment, all delivered in one straight line but with focus, persistence and detail - this one will require some patience. I like the styling, it's well worked with tannins that are fine and integrated, supporting the dark blackcurrant, black cherry and blackberry flavours with minty freshness from the start. Mouthwatering but also with structure, it feels stylish and sophisticated - absolutely delivers what you expect from Penfolds. Ageing 17 months in French oak hogsheads (56% new, 44% one year old).
